Edmond de Schampheleer Washerwomen near Ekkergem Church in Gent
Edmond de Schampheleer (1824-1898), washerwomen (lavandières) near Ekkergem church in Gent, painted after 1870, probably in the 1880's, oil on canvas, signed bottom right, 61,5 x 92 cm, dimensions with restored frame 70 x 101 cm. A very detailed painting of the end of the 19th century showing the then rural neighbourhood of Ekkergem, with its famous 'Halle' church, its tower since then rebuilt, but the renaissance chapel at the side clearly recognisable. It is the first time we have come across this topographical view by a Belgian painter.
