James Drummond (Edinburgh 1816-1877), the Cross of Edinburgh, 11th August 1600, 1863, oil on panel, 91,5 x 70 cm, dimensions with the original frame 121 x 100,5 cm, signed 'JDrummond' and dated '1863' bottom right. Exhibited at: Royal Academy of Arts. MDCCCLXIII – the ninety-fifth, London,1863, cat. number 633; Royal Scottish Academy, Edinburgh, 1864, cat. number 582 as ‘King James VI, publicly returning thanks after the Cowrie Conspiracy. In the catalogue to ‘The Exhibition of the Royal Academy of Arts’, London, Willam Clowes and sons, 1863, the following text was published describing the scene: “While King James VI (of Scotland) was hunting near Falkland, he was wiled away from the hunting-field by a brother of the Earl of Cowrie, and taken to the Earl’s house in Perth, where an attempt was made upon his life; but having been rescued by some of his courtiers who had followed him, he returned to Edinburgh and publicly returned thanks at the Market Cross for his escape from the treason.” One of the most important paintings of the artist.
